What is it?

It's an area of groundwater contamination spreading from Bethpage's former Grumman plant. 4.3 miles long, 2.1 miles wide, and 900 feet deep, it expands at a rate of 1 foot per day.

Why does it matter?

It's already entered our aquifers, threatening drinking water for ~250,000 residents. The carcinogen trichloroethylene, or TCE, is the primary contaminant of concern. It was found at concentrations as high as 2740x the 5 parts per billion (ppb) drinking-water standard.
